How This Tool Works

This tool calculates the Moon's current position in the sky based on your location and the current time. It shows the Moon's azimuth (compass direction), altitude (angle above the horizon), phase, illumination, moon age, and distance from Earth.

The calculations use standard astronomical algorithms and your geographic coordinates. Values update as time passes. This provides a practical astronomical estimate — not laboratory-grade precision.

Where is the Moon right now?▼

Enable your location and the tool shows the Moon's current position in the sky — its azimuth (compass direction), altitude (angle above the horizon), and current phase.

How can I find the Moon's direction?▼

The azimuth value shows the Moon's compass direction in degrees. The cardinal direction (North, South, East, West) is displayed below it, telling you which way to look.

What does Moon altitude mean?▼

Altitude is the angle of the Moon above the horizon. 0° means it is on the horizon, +90° means it is directly overhead, and negative values mean it is below the horizon and not visible.

How is the Moon phase determined?▼

The phase is based on the Moon's age in its orbit around Earth. The tool shows eight phases: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent.

What does illumination percentage mean?▼

Illumination shows how much of the Moon's disk is lit by the Sun. 0% is a New Moon, 50% is a quarter phase, and 100% is a Full Moon. A visual bar also shows this value.

How can I find moonrise and moonset times?▼

The tool calculates moonrise and moonset times for your location and the current date. If the Moon does not rise or set today from your position, the tool indicates that.
